Sitting in an immaculate rock garden overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, I leisurely enjoy the final phase of a remarkable gastronomic experience: whimsically presented petit fours (inside a model train) with fragrant tea. Despite 13 inspired courses – each more inventive than the last – I will remember this moment as a unique and masterful celebration of inventive culinary innovation; quality local ingredients in

perfect harmony with an artistic presentation and a remarkable attention to detail – capable of impressing even the most discerning palates.

Carme Ruscalleda’s charming restaurant, Sant Pau, is located in the tiny seaside town of Sant Pol de Mar in the Maresme district of Barcelona province. Inaugurated in 1988, the 19th century location was once a seasonal hostel located directly across the street from the grocery store owned by the

celebrated chef’s family. The townhouse venue features two dining settings in warm, inviting colors; a room looking out to the aforementioned garden and a gallery displaying colorful food-related artwork – plus a dedicated staff catering to just 35 guests.

The cuisine is decidedly Mediterranean – rich in local produce, meats, dairy and seasonings – with a hint of Japanese influence. Strictly adhering to a philosophy
